4:00 p.m. Transitioning from industry to academia, Lavery spent five years developing his courses and teaching skills at the University of Oregon's School of Journalism and Communication. During that time he won a research grant, invitations to a variety of institutes, and the School's annual "outstanding innovative teacher" award. He was a charter faculty member and competition judge for the American Association of Advertising Agencies' (AAAA) Institute of Advanced Advertising Studies in Portland, and he served on the boards of the American Advertising Museum, the Portland Advertising Federation, the Eugene Opera, and the University of Oregon Alumni Association. He also served on the American Advertising Federation's national academic committee from Spring 1995 until Fall 1997. Lavery has presented often to industry groups, and occasionally
consults with advertising agencies and marketers. He accepted a
position as an associate professor and charter faculty member at
Virginia Commonwealth University's Adcenter graduate program in
1996. In June 1999, he was appointed associate director of VCU's
