Photo of Rober LaveryDean Lavery's seventeen years in agency account management represents a tour of the country's largest advertising centers; New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. During those years, he handled a wide variety of accounts including; Celestial Seasonings, General Mills, Hyundai, Memorex, Nabisco, Noxell, Jos. E. Seagrams & Sons, R J Reynolds, South Carolina Tourism, Sun-Diamond Growers, and Union Carbide. During his advertising career he was the recipient of three American Marketing Association Effie Awards.

Transitioning from industry to academia, Lavery spent five years developing his courses and teaching skills at the University of Oregon's School of Journalism and Communication. During that time he won a research grant, invitations to a variety of institutes, and the School's annual "outstanding innovative teacher" award. He was a charter faculty member and competition judge for the American Association of Advertising Agencies' (AAAA) Institute of Advanced Advertising Studies in Portland, and he served on the boards of the American Advertising Museum, the Portland Advertising Federation, the Eugene Opera, and the University of Oregon Alumni Association. He also served on the American Advertising Federation's national academic committee from Spring 1995 until Fall 1997.

Lavery has presented often to industry groups, and occasionally consults with advertising agencies and marketers. He accepted a position as an associate professor and charter faculty member at Virginia Commonwealth University's Adcenter graduate program in 1996. In June 1999, he was appointed associate director of VCU's School of Mass Communications. On
July 1, 2000 he began his appointment as Professor of Communication and Dean of the School of Communication at Northern Arizona University. On July 1st, 2005 he joined Ball State University as Dean of the College of Communication, Information, and Media, and Professor of Journalism.
